BUCHAREST, 29 June 2024 – Following a unanimous endorsement by the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly’s Bureau in April, the Assembly’s Standing Committee today overwhelmingly re-elected Secretary General Roberto Montella for another five-year term. His new mandate will begin on 1 January 2026 and end 31 December 2030.
The Secretary General holds general responsibility for managing the affairs of the Assembly; ensuring the efficiency of the Secretariat and overseeing its Copenhagen and Vienna offices; and carrying out the decisions of the Bureau, the Standing Committee and the Assembly. He reports to the President, the Bureau and the Standing Committee at the Assembly’s Annual Sessions and in other meetings.
Upon his re-election today, the Secretary General said that he is honoured to continue serving the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. “Serving some one billion people from Vancouver to Vladivostok, OSCE parliamentarians have a vital role to play in these trying times,” Montella said. “It is an honour and a privilege to support these members of parliament in their important work, and I thank them for the trust that they have placed in me.”
Montella has previously served in the OSCE PA International Secretariat as Director of Presidential Administration, and held positions at OSCE field missions in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, and Serbia and Montenegro, fulfilling a range of advisory, peace-building and management functions. He also served as Head of the OSCE South Serbia Regional Office and Head of the European Center for Minority Issues in Kosovo.
First assuming his post in January 2016, Secretary General was re-elected by the Standing Committee in 2019 for a second five-year mandate starting 1 January 2021.
