Entered politics in the wake of the 1989 revolution in the GDR, in the course of which he acted as speaker of the Heiligenstadt people’s movement. In January 1990 he joined the CDU and assumed various positions with the CDU in Eichsfeld county and the state of Thuringia.

In 1994, he was first elected to the German Bundestag for Heiligenstadt-Worbis-Nordhausen in Thuringia, a seat he has held ever since (renamed as Eichsfeld-Nordhausen-Kyffhauserkreis in 2017).

He has served as parliamentary secretary of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group since 1998.

Michael Georg Link is a Member of the German Bundestag, currently serving his third term in parliament (2005-2013; 2017-present), representing the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and his native constituency of Heilbronn in the state of Baden-Württemberg. He serves as spokesperson for European affairs of the FDP Group in the Bundestag. He is a Member of the Committee on European Affairs and a Substitute Member of the Budget Committee and the Committee on Foreign Affairs. He is a Member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), where he has been a Vice-President of the ALDE group. Link is also a Member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE, where he serves as Vice-Chair of the LDR group and as Vice-Chair of the Committee on Democracy, Human Rights and Humanitarian Questions. Link is a Member of the steering committee of the German-French Parliamentary Assembly and Vice-Chair of the German-Russian Parliamentary Group, Member of the Party Council of the European Liberals (ALDE) and a Member of the Party Board of FDP. Prior to his current mandate, he was the Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights from July 2014 to July 2017.
