OSCE PA leadership highlights regional co-operation during visit to Turkmenistan

ASHGABAT, 27 November 2024 – OSCE Parliamentary Assembly President Pia Kauma and Special Representative on Central Asia Farah Karimi concluded a two-day bilateral visit to Turkmenistan, held on 26-27 November, highlighting the importance of parliamentary diplomacy and collaborative approaches to shared challenges.

President Kauma held a high-level meeting with the President of Turkmenistan, H.E. Serdar Berdimuhamedov. Discussions focused on fostering closer co-operation between Turkmenistan and the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly to address regional security, sustainable development, and climate resilience.

Dunyagozel Gulmanova, Chairperson of the Mejlis, and Rashid Meredov, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. These discussions underscored the significance of inter-parliamentary engagement and multilateral collaboration in tackling pressing global and regional issues, including environmental protection, countering terrorism, youth and women empowerment.

On Tuesday, the delegation was warmly received at the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat by Ambassador John S. MacGregor, Head of the Centre. In a symbolic act of commitment to sustainability, President Kauma and Ambassador MacGregor planted a tree at the Centre’s new premises. This gesture emphasized the Assembly’s dedication to environmental action as a core element of regional stability.

President Kauma thanked Turkmen authorities for continued engagement with the OSCE PA and reiterated the Assembly’s readiness to support dialogue and practical initiatives that build trust and foster co-operation across Central Asia.

The visit reaffirmed the OSCE PA’s commitment to promoting inclusive dialogue and advancing comprehensive solutions to challenges within the region and beyond.
