Statement of Special Representative Charalambides marking International Anti-Corruption Day

COPENHAGEN, 9 December 2024 – Observing International Anti-Corruption Day 2024, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly’s Special Representative on Fighting Corruption, Vice-President Irene Charalambides (Cyprus), issued the following statement:

“On International Anti-Corruption Day, we must reflect on the persistent and far-reaching impacts of corruption on our nations, societies, and institutions. Corruption erodes trust, weakens the rule of law and hampers economic development. It diverts essential resources from those who need them most, perpetuates systemic inequality, and fosters a culture of impunity. Furthermore, corruption often operates in tandem with organized crime, money laundering and even terrorism, amplifying their destructive consequences.

This day calls for us to acknowledge our shared responsibility in combating corruption in all its forms. As members of parliament and policymakers, we play a pivotal role. Our responsibilities go beyond legislating; we must also ensure the effective implementation of the laws we pass. Independent institutions, such as Supreme Audit Institutions and Anti-Corruption Authorities, must be empowered and supported to detect, investigate, and address corruption. Strengthening these institutions is vital to uncovering malpractice and reinforcing public trust.

Moreover, establishing and sustaining robust mechanisms of checks and balances is essential. These mechanisms must be rooted in transparency, accountability and good governance. At the core of this effort lies our unwavering political will to lead by example, demonstrating our commitment to combating corruption and fostering a culture of integrity.

However, political will alone cannot succeed in isolation. Addressing corruption requires a multi-faceted, collaborative approach. We need to build synergies across borders and foster partnerships with international organizations, civil society, the media, academia, the private sector and individuals. Each stakeholder has a unique and crucial role to play in this collective fight. For instance, the media and civil society serve as watchdogs, ensuring transparency and holding leaders accountable, while international organizations help set global standards and facilitate cross-border co-operation.

On this International Anti-Corruption Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to the principles of transparency, accountability, and integrity. Let us strengthen our resolve to tackle corruption not just as a legal or policy issue but as a moral imperative. Together, through decisive action and collective effort, we can build a fairer, more equitable, and corruption-free world.”
